On "International Enactments and Practices on Intellectual Property Rights"

On : 15th-17th December 2003

AT :HOTEL LE MERIDIEN, NEW DELHI - 110 001

About the Institute

The Institute of Intellectual Property Research and Practice was registered as a society in 1995, as a consequence to an agreement on Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights 'TRIPS' as part of WTO agreement signed in December 1994, primarily to provide industrial training and education in the field of intellectual property rights, their practices and legal enforcement in international scenario.

Intellectual property being intangible in nature is more fragile and needs international protection and commercialization in global economy. At the same time intellectual property circulates in the globe with greater ease since the arrival of digital network. In order to provide information and update international status on intellectual property, the Institute has been regularly holding international seminars as one of its focused activity, on its own or in collaboration with various Government and international agencies, such as Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) Ministry of Science and Technology, National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Export-Import Bank of India among others on an ongoing basis.

International seminars are organized with the sole objective to educate and sensitize the Indian industry with international happenings in intellectual property, to enable them to form long-term strategy and be pro-active in protection and commercialisation of their intellectual property rights, in new world order.

The institute also provides a platform and medium to exploit the intellectual assets to the maximum and hone the intellectual skills in the field of IPR in India. In this direction the Institute has established a valuation center which undertakes valuation of intellectual capital and an IPR audit Cell. The audit cell studies and advises on all aspects of such rights as for example, what rights belong to a corporation, whether the corporation is adequately protecting its intellectual property rights, is the mode of protection correct and adequate, is the owner's portfolio properly maintained and commercialised, is there any risk of infringing third party rights and like subjects, in order to make IPR as low investment growth mantra and mange IPR-Risk. The Institute also provides assistance in transfer of technology, licensing, remittance, verification of royalties and license fee to foreign countries and many more cognate and allied subjects.

The Institute has a centrally air-conditioned and well laid out premises. It has well furnished and equipped library holding about 3000 books on intellectual property itself, conference rooms, research center, self study center, record room, dinning hall and recreation room and all facilities are directed towards the goal of learning the benefits of intellectual property research and practice.

About the CSIR

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, CSIR, in short, is a nationwide R & D platform comprising 38 laboratories and 50 outreach centers spanning diverse disciplines and industrial sectors. The multi-disciplinary and multi-locational organisation is today a vibrant, performance driven, customer oriented set-up, manned by around 5200 scientists of which over 3000 are Ph.Ds. It contributes to nearly 64% of the US patents granted to all Indians, straddles the position of the highest PCT patent filer amongst all developing countries, besides spearheading the movement for recognition and acceptance of “Traditional Knowledge” in the international patent search. CSIR has many global S & T firsts to its credit and is now assisting select Indian industry to capture global leadership position, in niche areas, based on technology advantage.

About the Seminar

Intellectual Property Profile is consistently been judged as the international bench mark, as intellectual property is no more a national subject and is primarily regulated by TRIPS Agreement. The scenario of IP enforcement and protection in India is extremely encouraging; there is an upsurge in awareness, recognition, understanding and appreciation of developments in this field and the Indian Business community is appropriately pro-active to the changes that are taking place, in order to remain competitive in the international market. The understanding of international scenario provides for pro-active IPR-risk management approach and makes IPR as low investment growth factor.

The Institute has played a crucial role in its promotion as it has consistently held international seminars for the last many years. In these seminars we have invited highly qualified speakers of international repute, from Intellectual Property Firms and from the Foreign Govt. Agencies to apprise and communicate the current happening in their countries. This is done with the intentions of exposing the local Industry to the World's current practices on IPR, in order to equip ourself and to plan our strategies accordingly. In this direction the Institute has planned another international seminar wherein we have brought together a team of experts, who shall focus on:

HOW THE SEMINAR IS UNIQUE

The organiser is providing the delegates a unique opportunity to closely interact with the world's best renowned IPR Experts, who are joining from different establishments of repute like, Judge Patent County Court, London, U. K., Advisor Hetrocyclic Chemistry with the European Patent Office, and Patent Attorney of leading IPR firms such as Ladas & Parry (USA) Sughrue Mion PLLC, (USA) Denton Wilde Sapte (UK) and Nakamura & Partners (Japan)

One of the major benefits of joining the seminar is to immediately update with the current information on international scenario. The organiser shall also organise an informal gathering over cocktail-cum-dinner for delegates to facilitate closer interaction with the faculty for better understanding of issues, and to seek focused professional advice, which can go a long way in development and protection of corporate intellectual property
