About the Institute
The Institute of Intellectual Property Research and Practice was registered as a society in 1995 for providing education and training in the field of Intellectual Property Rights, their practices and legal enforcement, research and comparative study with an objective to make the intellectual property rights progressive, creative and beneficial to the well being of people around the world.
The institute also provides a platform and medium to exploit the intellectual assets to the maximum and hone the intellectual skills in the field of IPR in India.
Institute focuses on awarding awareness of international scenario and promoting and educating those intellectual property rights which are recognized in more advanced countries but are not well known in India and such rights on which our Supreme Court is prepared to adjudicate. In order to achieve the aim the Institute has well established infrastructure maintains a well stocked library and has set up a research center. The Institute has also established a valuation center which undertakes valuation of intellectual property rights and an IPR audit Cell. The audit cell studies and advises on all aspects of such rights as for example what rights belong to a corporation, whether the corporation is adequately protecting its intellectual property rights, is the mode of protection adequate, is the owner's portfolio properly maintained and the risk of infringing third party rights and like subjects. The Institute provides assistance in transfer of technology, licensing, remittance of royalties and license fee to foreign countries and many more cognate and allied subjects.
About the TIFAC
Technology Information Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC). TIFAC is an autonomous body registered under the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. It is a unique institution covering a lot of ground on technology development, by promoting innovative technologies at one end and providing technology support services like information and assessment on the other.
In 1995, a Patent Facilitating Centre (PFC) was created at TIFAC for creating patent and IPR awareness in the country and providing a single window system for protecting the inventive works of Indian scientists through patents and other forms of IPR. The centre has so far conducted 180 IPR awareness workshops across the country, sensitizing more than 20,000 scientists and technologists.
PFC has taken a number of concerted and consistent steps for capacity building in the area of IPR at different levels of creativity and inventive spirit by way of organising training programmes, facilitating IP protecting and also developing facilities to conduct patent searches, etc. In the coming days, PFC plans to launch scholarships for educated women having good science/engineering/medical qualifications under the Women Scientists' Scheme for unleashing dormant scientific force. PFC has many firsts to its credit and has brought out a number of IPR reports and IPR products, viz. "Patenting of Microorganism" "Ekaswa" CDs on Indian Patents, "Patents Made Easy" video, to name a few.
About the Seminar
The role of Intellectual Property, in an international market economy driven by strident advances in technology, can perhaps never be over-emphasized. The dynamics of technology management have radically changed in the post WTO era. In order to remain competitive in the international markets, it becomes imperative that Indian technology mangers understand the nuances of the various agreements affecting the technology development chain, staring from innovation to actual delivery, and develop systems and strategies suited for the new environment.
The IIPRP in collaboration with TIFAC has been playing a crucial role in the promotion of IPR awareness as well as building capacity at various levels. The International Seminar held in January 2002 and the one in December 1998 are efforts in this direction. These seminars have provided platforms for regorous interaction between the participants and patent expert from foreign attorney firms as well as patent offices of Europe. The focus of seminar this time will be :
1. Patenting inventions related to heterocyclic chemistry, pharmaceutically active compounds, intermediate and biological materials.
2. Software protection and e-commerce
3. Doctrine of Equivalents and U.S. Patent claims - recent changes
4. Opposition and Appeal Procedure and its consequences in European Patent Office including influences of traditional art.
5. Trademarks infringements
6. Economics of IPR protection and Due Diligence in IPR licensing
7. Patent (Amendment) Act 2002 and its implications.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Drafting a patent is the most critical aspect of obtaining patent right for an invention. Properly drafted claims help increasing the scope of the protection as well as in putting forward the invention in its true technical scientific and legal aspects. The following areas will be covered:
1. Pharmaceutical, organic and biochemistry
2. Software and business methods
The workshop will cover various aspects of drafting patent specification with the help of case studies on patents examined and granted by European Patent Office, Japanese Patent Office, United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Who should attend
Those who are engaged in Research, Agents and Practitioners of law in the field of intellectual property, senior executives, (particularly CEO's), Proprietors and Partners of middle sized manufacturing concerns, and last but not least persons interested in research covering organic chemistry, hytrocyclic chemistry, intermediate and biological materials and processes. A separate group similarly will be concerned with software and business methods.
